ABBERTON, a small village and parish, 4.5 miles S. of Colchester, contains 269 souls, and 1067 acres of strong loamy land, mostly arable. Thos. White, Esq. , is lord of the manor of Abberton Hall, and John Bawtree, Esq., of Badcocks ; but part of the soil belongs to several smaller proprietors.
The Church (St. Andrew) stands on an eminence, and is a small plain edifice, with a brick steeple. The rectory, valued in K.B. at £14. 7s. 84d,, and in 1831 at £295, is in the gift of the Lord Chancellor, and incumbency of the Rev. John Holroyd, M.A., who resides at the White Hall, Colchester; the old parsonage-house, and 52A. 21P. of glebe, being occupied by a farmer. The tithes have been commuted for £314 per annum. The Wesleyans have a small chapel here.
