Cranham 1848 Whites directory
CRANHAM, a pleasant scattered village, on an eminence, 5 miles E.S.E. of Romford, has in its parish 280 souls, and 1875A. of land, including 37A of roads and waste. It was anciently called Bishop’s Okendon, or Wokendon, and the manor was held successively by the Curson, Trendle, Selman, Mordaunt, Petre, and Wright families, and was purchased in the latter part of the last century by Sir Thomas H. Apreece, Bart. , whose successor, the late Sir Thos. George Apreece, Bart. , bequeathed it, with all his other property, to St. George’s Hospital, London ; but the validity of his will is still disputed by his sister, Mrs. Peacock, on the ground of insanity, though a judgment has been given against her. H. J. Hance, Esq. , of Bellevue House ; Mr. J. Bankin, and a few smaller owners, have estates here. Mrs. Greenwood Penny occupies Cranham Hall, an ancient mansion, with pleasant grounds.
The Church ( All Saints,) is a small antique structure, and the benefice is a rectory, valued in K.B. at £13. 13s. 4d. , and in 1831 at £564. It is in the patronage of St. John’s College, Oxford, and incumbency of the Rev. Thomas Ludbey, M.A., who has 40A. 18. 27p. of glebe, and a large white brick Rectory House, built in 1790, by Dr. G. Strahan, a former incumbent and patron. The tithes were commuted in 1841 for £560 per annum.
