Little Burstead or Burghstead, is a parish near the source of the river Crouch, 2 miles south west from Billericay station, on the Southend on Sea branch of the London and North Eastern railway, and 6 east from Brentwood.
The parish is now governed by the Billericay Urban District Council.
The church assigned to St Mary, is a small building in the Early English style, consisting of chancel and nave, south porch and a low, western turret with spire, containing two bells; there are several flat stones in the chancel to the Walton family. The church has 140 sittings.
The register dates from the year 1681. The living is a rectory, yearly value £382, with residence and glebe, in the gift of the Bishop of Chelmsford, and held since 1935 by the Rev Ernest Harvey Morison of St Augustines College, Canterbury.
Stockwell Hall is the seat of Lady Mary Savile, and has attached grounds of 30 acres. The Earl of Mexborough is the principal landowner.
The soil is loamy; subsoil loamy. The chief crops are wheat, oats, beans and barley. The area is 4,892 acres; the population in 1931 was 1,629 in the civil and 484 in the exxlesiastical parish.
