Pattiswick 1863 Whites Directory

PATTISWICK, a small village and parish, 2 miles W.N.W. of Coggeshall, and 4 miles E. by N. of Braintree, has 316 souls, and 1635A. 2R. 6P. of land; and is in Braintree Union. As a member of Feering parish, it belonged to Westminster Abbey till the dissolution, after which it was given to the Bishop of London. The Bishop of Rochester is now lord ofthe manor, but most of the soil belongs to O. Hanbury, Esq. , Sir J. B. Pechell, Bart., and several smaller owners. It is partly free and partly copyhold, and was anciently called Pate’s-wick, from the Pate family, who held it in the reign of Edward II. The Hall, now a farm-house, had formerly a large park.
The Church (St. Mary) is pleasantly situated on the village green, and is a small edifice, with a wooden spire. It was built in the reign of Edward I., and was subject to that at Feering till 1313. The benefice is a perpetual curacy, endowed with all the tithes, and valued in 1831 at £244. The Bishop of Rochester is patron, and the Rev. Percy Smith, M.A., is the incumbent, and has an old but commodious residence, and 17A. 3R. 10p. of glebe. The tithes were commuted in 1842, for £342. 10s. per annum.
Here is a National School ; and the poor widows of the parish have a yearly rent-charge of £2. 12s., left by an unknown donor out of the Hall farm. Postfrom Coggeshall.
