Stock, (sometimes called Harwood or Harwards Stock) is a parish and pleasant village, situated on the summit of a range of hills, on the road from Chelmsford to Billericay, 3 miles south from Ingatestone station, 3 north from Billericay, and 5 south west from Chelmsford.
The church of All Saints is an ancient building, and underwent extensive repairs in the years 1847-8; the interior was entirely reseated; the chancel was at the same time rebuilt by the present rector.
The register dates from 1563. The living is a rectory, with Ramsden Bellhouse annexed, joint yearly value £885, in the gift of Rev Edward John Edison, MA, of Christs College, Cambridge
The chief landowner is Lord Petre, who is also Lord of the manor, The soil is light; subsoil white sand and gravel : near Galley Wood, on the verge of the parish, a still loam prevails, formerly called by the inhabitants brick and pot earth: stock bricks derived their name from this place. The area is 1,840 acres, and the population in 1861 was 657, gross estimated rental, £3,331; rateable vale £3,042.
