Stock, (or Stock Harvard) is a parish and pleasant village on the summit of a range of hills on the road from Chelmsford to Billericay, 3 miles south east from Ingatestone station on the main line of the Great Eastern railway and 3 north from Billericay on the branch line of that company from Shenfield to Maldon, Southminster and Southend, 6 south west from Chelmsford and 27 from London.
A stream which rises near Brick House flows through the parish.
The church of All Saints is an ancient building of stone in the Decorated style, consisting of chancel, nave of four bays, north aisle, south porch and a western tower of wood, with shingled spire, containg 3 bells: the church underwent extensive repairs in the years 1847-8; the interior was entirely reseated; the chancel rebuilt; an organ chamber was added at the east end of the north aisle at a cost of £800: there are 250 sittings.
The register dates from the year 1563. The living is a rectory, with that of Ramsden Bellhouse annexed, joint yearly value £400, with 38 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the trustees of Mrs E P Gibson and held since 1877 by the Rev Edward Pendarves Gibson BA, of St Peters College, Cambridge.
The Catholic church, dedicated to Our Lady of Mount Carmel, and licensed for marriages, is situated in the grounds of Lilystone Hall, and was once a private chapel attached to the house, but is now used by the public; Adjoining the school is a small cemetery. Here is a Congregational chapel. There are four almshouses founded by Richard Tredye esq of Boreham, for four poor knights , two for this parish and two for the parish of Boreham; but now occupied by poor persons.
Lilystone Hall, the residence of William Dunn esq. is pleasantly placed on an eminence enjoying extensive views of the surrounding country and his grounds of 8 acres. Greenwoods is the residence of Richard Adam Ellis esq JP.
Lord Petre is Lord of the manor, The soil is light; subsoil white sand and gravel : near Galley Wood, on the verge of the parish, a still loam prevails, formerly called by the inhabitants brick and pot earth: stock bricks derive their name from this place. The area is 2,636 acres, and the population in 1911 was 587.
The Local Government Board of Dec 17 1881 transferred the hamlet of Orsett to this parish.
