UPMINSTER, a pleasant scattered village on the western side of the Ingerbourn rivulet, and partly on an eminence, 3 miles E.S.E. of Romford, is surrounded by several handsome mansions, with beautiful pleasure grounds and plantations. Its parish contains 3157A. 1R. 8P. of fertile land, and in 1841 had 1117 inhabitants, of whom 177 were in the hamlet of CORBETS TYE, about a mile S.E., and 60 in the hamlet of HACTON, nearly a mile S. of the church. Mrs. Branfill, of Upminster Hall, a large brick mansion, with pleasant grounds, on an eminence amile south of the church, commanding extensive prospects, is lady of the manor of Upminster Hall, which was anciently called Waltham Hall, from its being given by Earl Harold to Waltham Abbey.
It was a retiring place for the abbots, who had a chapel and cemetery adjoining the hall, where human bones have been dug up. It has been held by the Latham, Strangeman, and Noel families, and was purchased of the latter in 1685 by Andrew Branfill, Esq. , of Dartmouth .James Cudden, Esq. , of Norwich, is now lord of the ma-nor of Gaines, which had a large and elegant seat, half a mile south of the church, but the house was pulled down, and the park and grounds sold in lots many years ago. It was successively a seat of the De Ewes, White, and Esdaile families . On part of the estate, the Rev. George Clayton erected a handsome house in the Tudor style in 1847- 8, at the cost of about £7000, called Great Gaines House. The soil of the parish is mostly m freehold, and among the principal proprietors are Mrs. Branfill, C. Russell, Esq., Capt. Cox, Mr. Jas. Esdaile, and Mr. T. Nokes.
Hacton House, a large brick mansion, with a finely wooded lawn, is the seat of the Rev. Richard Battiscombe. Harwood Hall, near Corbetstye, is the seat of Capt. Cox, and is a large mansion with sylvan pleasure grounds. New Place, another handsome seat, on the east side of the village, belongs to James Harmer, Esq. , and is occupied by Frederick Francis, Esq.
The Church (St. Lawrence,) is an ancient fabric, with an ivy-mantled tower, containing three bells, and crowned by a wooden spire. A handsome screen separates the nave and chancel, and in the latter is a richly carved stone font. On the north side is a chapel, built by Sir John Engaine for the burial place of his family, and called Gaines Chapel, but it was rebuilt about 1770 by Sir Jas. Esdaile, though it and the vault had been repaired by R. Latham, Esq. , in 1630, when a coffin of one of his family, interred 350 years before, was broken open, and the body found free from any appearance of decay. The rectory, valued in K.B. at £26.13s. 4d. , and in 1831 at £960, is in the patronage of the trustees of the late J. R. Holden, Esq., and incumbency of the Rev. John Rose Holden, who has a good residence. The tithes were commuted in 1842 for £1052 per annum. Here is an Independent Chapel, built in 1800, and repaired at the cost of £130 in 1847. The Rev. G. Clayton is the minister. About 80A. of common, in the manor of Gaines, was enclosed in 1846. Thomas Frith, in 1610, gave to this parish a yearly rent-charge of £4. 10s, out of land called Cockhides, in North Ockenden; 12s. to be paid for a sermon, &c., on St. Mark’s day; and £3. 18s. to be distributed in weekly doles of bread among the poor.
The parish workhouse was sold in 1837. The Rev. Dr. Derham, a learned and pious divine, and one of the most useful members of the Royal Society, was rector here from 1689 till about 1740.
