VIRLEY, or Salcott Virley, is a small parish at the head of the creek, opposite Salcott, 8 miles S.S.W. of Colchester. At the domesday survey it belonged to Robert de Verli, and since 1370, it has been held by the Lee, De Vere, and other families. It contains only 68 souls, and 626 acres of land. T. N. Abdy, Esq. , is now lord ofthe manor, but part of the soil belongs to Sir William Abdy, Bart. , and a few smaller owners. An estate, called Abbot’s Wic, formerly belonging to the Abbot of St. Osyth, is on the north side of the parish.
The Church (Virgin Mary,) is a small antique structure, and the living is a rectory, valued in K.B. at £7. 13s. 4d., and in 1831 at £140. It is in thegift of the Rev. C. S. Coxwell, and incumbency of the Rev. Jas. Cox, M.A., who resides at Tolleshunt Knights, and has here 19A of glebe, but no parsonage. The tithes have been commuted for £126 per annum; and the poor have £5 a year from Abdy’s Charity, as noticed with Tolleshunt Knights.
The FARMERS are Henry Blyth, Great Paynes ; John Blyth , Barns Hall; Executors of Gideon Heard, Virley Hall ; Mary Ann Palmer, shoemaker and vict., White Hart; and William Tiffin, butcher and blacksmith.
