VIRLEY, or Salcott Virley, is a amall parish at the head of the creek, opposite Salcott, 8 miles S.S.W. of Colchester. At the domesday survey it belonged to Robert de Verli, and since 1370, it has been held by the Lee, De Vere, and other families. It contains only 69 souls and 626 acres of land. Sir Thos. N. Abdy, Bart. , is lord of the manor ; but part of the soil belongs to Sir William Abdy, Bart. An estate, called Abbot’s Wic, formerly belonging to the Abbot of St. Osyth, is on the north side of the parish.
The Church (Virgin Mary) is a small anatique structure, and the living is a rectory, valued in K.B. at £7. 13s. 4d. , and in 1831 at £140.
It is in the alternate patronage of the Rev. C. S. Coxwell and Sir T. N. Abdy ; and incumbency of the Rev. James Cox, M.A., who resides at Tolleshunt D’Arcy, and has here 22A. of glebe, but no parsonage. The tithes have been commuted for £162 per annum; and the poor have £5 a year from Abdy’s Charity, as noticed with Tolleshunt Knights.
