Shelley 1863 Whites directory
SHELLEY, a small parish of scattered houses between the river Roding and Cripsey brook, 1½ mile N. of Chipping Ongar, has only 215 inhabitants and 660 acres of land. Richard Tomlinson, Esq. , of Shelley Hall, is lord of the manor, which was purchased of the Kimpton family, but part of the parish belongs to J. B. Stane, Esq., Thomas White, Esq. , and a few smaller owners. Shelley Hallwas formerly moated, and many of its rooms are rich in fine oak carvings. Brundish Hall was a mansion of considerable extent and antiquity, and what remains of it is now a small farm house, still surrounded by a moat.
The Church (St. Peter) consists of a small nave and chancel of brick, and a wooden turret. It was built in 1811, on the site of the old one, which was so much decayed that it had not been used during the preceding eleven years. The rectory, valued in K.B. at £9. 15s., and in 1831 at £260, is in the patronage of R. Tomlinson, Esq., and incumbency of the Rev. Francis J. Newton. The glebe is 37 acres, and the Rectory House is an ancient timber-framed building, which was for some time the quiet retreat of Dr. Thomas Newton, Bishop of Bristol, the well-known writer upon the Prophecies, who died in 1782. It was restored in 1861. The tithes were commuted in 1840. In the church is an inscription in memory of John Green and his wife, who had thirteen children, and lived to see 111 grandchildren. The poor parishioners have the dividends of £110. 5s. 2d. Three per Cent. Consols, left by Harvey Kimpton, in 1817; and also the dividends of £333. 6s. 8d. Three per Cent. Bank Annuities, left by William Bullock, in 1822.
