Theydon Garnon 1848 Whites directory
THOYDON-GARNON, or THEYDON GERNON, is a pleasant straggling village, from 1 to 2 miles S.S.E. of Epping, but its parish extends close to that town, and has several handsome seats and scattered farm houses, near Steward’s Green, Coopersale, and the north eastern borders of Epping Forest. The parish had 1072 inhabitants in 1841, including 140 in Epping Union Workhouse. It contains 3160 acres of land, and has a fertile soil, richly cultivated, and embellished with ornamental plantations, contrasting beautifully with the old woods of the forest. It was held by Ulmar, in the reign of Edward the Confessor, and by Eudo Dapifer, at the Domesday Survey. It was afterwards held by the Theydon, Gernon, Fitzwilliam, and other families. Wm. C. Marsh, Esq. , (high sheriff of Essex, in 1847, ) is lord of the manors and estates, called Gayns Park and Hamnales, and has a handsome seat, called PARK HALL, encompassed by fine woodland scenery. T. N. Abdy, Esq. , is lord of the manor of Theydon Garnon, or Garnish Hall, now a farm house ; and Mrs. Houblon is owner of Coopersale estate, on the north side of the parish, near Epping, and resides at Coopersale House, a large and elegant mansion, which stands on elevated ground, surrounded by lawns and ornamental plantations, and was long the seat of the Archer family, which originated from Simon de Bois, who was at the battle of Agincourt, and was so skilful in archery, that the King ordered his name to be changed to Archer. Mrs. and Richd. Archer Houblon are the present representatives of this ancient family. Sir P. B. H. Soame, Bart. , has an occasional residence here ; and the Hon. A. F. Capel resides at Thoydon House ; and J. C. Whiteman, at The Grove.
The CHURCH (All Saints,) stands on an eminence, and consists of a nave, north aisle, and chancel, with a strong square tower, containing five bells. The interior is neatly fitted up, and has many mural monuments. The rectory, valued in K.B. at £ 17, and in 1831 at £700 , is in the patronage of T. N. Abdy, Esq., and incumbency of the Rev. C. H. Foster, B.A., who has a good residence and about 70A. of glebe. The tithes were commuted in 1838, for £650 per annum. Lady Fitzwilliam’s Hospital, at Thoydon Garnon, was founded by the widow of Sir Wm. Fitzwilliam, in 1602, for four poor widows, who have a yearly rent-charge of £12, out ofan estate at Stoke Doyle, in Northampton- shire, belonging to Lord Montague. As noticed with Epping, this parish receives about £40 yearly from Barker’s Charity, to be applied as follows, £4. 4s. for the above-mentioned almswomen; £6.6s. for schooling six poor girls ; £5. 5s. for the master and mistress of the Sunday school, and the remainder for distribution among the poor parishioners in beef and bread. The dividends of £300 three per cent. Reduced Annuities, derived from the sale of timber on Baker’s Charity land, and savings of income, are applied in apprenticing poor children of this parish, which has also a share of the timber in Redyns Wood. In 1750, Thurston Winstanley bequeathed for the poor of Thoydon Garnon, a house and 3A. of land, at North Weald Bassett, now let for £12. They have also two annual rent-charges, viz. , £2 out of Coopersale House, left by Henry Archer; and £2 out of the Grove estate, given by William Black, in 1793. Five cottages, occupied by paupers, are supposed to have been purchased with £50, left by John Hylard. The poor of this parish and those of Epping, have equal shares of the rent of 124. of land, called Trapp’s land, at Thoydon Mount, given by John Reynolds, in 1647, and now let for £15 a-year.
