Theydon Garnon 1863 Whites directory
THOYDON-GARNON, or THEYDON-GERNON, sometimes called Coopersale, is a pleasant straggling village, from one to two miles S.S.E. of Epping, but its parish extends close to the town, and has several handsome seats and scattered farm houses, near Steward’s Green, Coopersale, and the north-eastern borders of Epping Forest. The parish had 1237 inhabitants in 1851, including 157 in Epping Union Workhouse. It contains 3160A. of land, and has a fertile soil, richly cultivated, and embellished with ornamental plantations, contrasting beautifully with the old woods of the forest. It was held by Ulmar, in the reign of Edward the Confessor, and by Eudo Dipifer, at the Domesday Survey. It was afterwards held by the Theydon, Garnon, Fitzwilliam, and other families. T. C. C. Marsh, Esq. , of Marden Ash, is lord of the manors and estates, called Gayns Park and Hamnates; but the handsome seat, called PARKHALL, or GAYNS PARK, is the residence of William C. Marsh, Esq. Sir T. N. Abdy, Bart., is lord of the manor of Theydon Garnon, or Garnish Hall, now a farm house; and John Archer Houblon, Esq., of Hallingbury, is the owner of Coopersale estate, on the north side of the parish, near Epping, but Mrs. Houblon, and C. Bailey, Esq. , stands on elevated ground, surrounded by lawns and ornamental plantations, and was long the seat of the Archer family.
The CHURCH (All Saints) stands on an eminence, and consists a nave, north aisle, and chancel, with a strong square tower, containing five bells. The interior is neatly fitted up, and has many mural monuments. The rectory, valued in K.B. at £17, and in 1831 at £700, is in the patronage of Sir T. N. Abdy, and incumbency of the Rev. Sir C. H. Foster, B.A., who has a good residence and about 70A. of glebe. The tithes were commuted in 1838, for £650 per annum.
Coopersale District Church ( St. Alban’s) was erected about 1855, for the northern parts of the parish, by Miss Archer Houblon, the patroness of the perpetual curacy, now valued at £90, in the incumbency of the Rev. Richard Fort, M.A. It is a neat structure of flint and stone.
Lady Fitzwilliam’s Hospital, at Thoydon, was founded by the the widow of Sir Wm. Fitzwilliam, in 1602, for four poor widows, who have a yearly rent-charge of £12, out of an estate at Stoke Doyle, in Northamptonshire. As noticed with Epping, this parish receives about £70 yearly from Baker’s Charity, to be applied in schooling poor children and relieving the poor parishioners and almspeople. The dividends of £100 three per cent. Annuities, derived from the sale of timber on Baker’s Charity land, and savings of income are applied to charitable uses in this parish, which has also a share of the timber in Redyns Wood. In 1750, Thurston Winstanley bequeathed for the poor of Thoydon Garnon, a house and 3A. of land, at North Weald Basset, now let for £13. They have also two annual rent-charges, viz.: £2 out of Coopersale House, left by Henry Archer; and £2 out of the Grove estate, given by Wm. Black, in 1793. Two cottages, occupied by paupers, are supposed to have been purchased with £50, left by John Hylard.
The poor of this parish and those of Epping, have equal shares of the rent of 12A. of land, called Trapp’s land at Thoydon Mount, given by John Reynolds, in 1647, and now let for £18 a year. The National School was built by Miss Houblon, in 1850.
