Thurstable Hundred 1848 Whites Directory

THURSTABLE HUNDRED
Is one of the smaller divisions of Essex, and is of an irregular oval figure, only about 10 miles in its greatest length, from east to west,
and from 3 to 6 miles in breadth. It is bounded, on the south and east, by the broad estuary of the Blackwater ; on the west, by the Borough of Maldon and Witham Hundred ; and on the north, by the latter and Winstree Hundred. At its east end, is the Salcott creek ; and at its west end is Maldon canal basin , communicating by short cuts with the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation. Near the Blackwater is a large tract of flat but fertile marshes, from which the rest of the Hundred rises in bold and picturesque undulations ; and on its north- western side, is the now cultivated and fertile tract, called Tiptree Heath, extending into many parishes in this and two adjoining Hundreds. Thurstable
Hundred is in the Northern Parliamentary Division of Essex, in the Diocese of Rochester, Archdeaconry of Colchester, and Deanery of Witham. The following enumeration of its ten parishes shews their territorial extent, the annual value of their lands and buildings, as assessed to the property tax in 1843, and their population in 1841.
The whole Hundred is in Witham Polling District, except Tollesbury parish, which is in Colchester Polling District.
