Wickham St Pauls 1863 Whites directory
WICKHAM ST. PAUL’S is a pleasant village, scattered round alarge green, 5 miles N. of Halstead, and 4 miles S.W. of Sudbury.
Its parish contains 409 souls and 1225 acres of land, including the small hamlet of CATLEY CROSS, one mile S. of the church, and several scattered farm houses. The Dean and Chapter of St. Paul’s, London, own a great part of the soil, and are lords of the manor, of which they were deprived during the Commonwealth, when one of the greedy government agents, stripped it of all its valuable timber. Their estate here is now held on lease by Mr. Isaac King, who occupies the Hall Farm. Part of the parish belongs to several smaller owners.
The Church (All Saints) is a neat fabric, with a tower and four bells. The nave and chancel have been restored, and the windows of the latter enriched with stained glass. The rectory, valued in K.B. at £9, and now at £400, is in the patronage of the Dean and Chapter of St. Paul’s, and incumbency of the Rev. W. K. Borton, M.A., who has 20A. of glebe, and a good residence, built in 1838. The poor parishioners have 4A. of land, called Able Croft, left by Mrs. Herrington. The rent is applied in aid of the School, built in 1852. A tenement, called Almshouses, is now occupied by the schoolmistress.
