Buttsbury 1871

Buttsbury is a parish and pleasant village, situated on the summit of a range of hills, on the road from Chelmsford to Billericay, 3 miles south from Ingatestone station, 3 north from Billericay and 5 south west from Chelmsford.
The church of St Mary is small, being only 36 feet by 21, the chancel 28 feet long and 21 wide on the outside; at the west end it has a square tower of brick with 1 bell: the church formerly belonged to the nunnery of St Leonard at Stratford, Bow. The living is a perpetual curacy annexed to the rectory of Ingatestone, joint yearly value £420 in the gift of Lord Petre, and held by the Rev Lewis Parkin, MA of St Johns College, Oxford. Lord Peter is Lord of the manor and chief landowner, The soil is light; subsoil white sand and gravel. The chief crops are wheat, oats and barley.
The area is 2,116 acres, and the population in 1861 was 531; gross estimated rental, £3,437; rateable value, £3,107.
