CHELMSFORD DIRECTORY, Including Moulsham and Springfield in 1848.
The POST OFFICE is in Conduit square, and Mr. Bramston Bacon is the postmaster. The post for down letters, viz. to Witham, Colchester, Braintree, Norfolk, Suffolk, &c. closes at half-past 8 night; and for up- letters, viz. to Ingatestone, Brentwood, Romford, &c. at 9 night; but letters for London, or which have to pass through the general Post Office, are received till 10 night.
For the Day Mail-box closes at half-past 11 morning for London, Brent- wood, Ingatestone, and other up-letters, as well as for Kelvedon, Colchester, Norfolk, Suffolk, and other down letters. Letters are taken in after the closing of the box, until the despatch of the mails, on the payment of the usual fees. The afternoon delivery commences at one, and that in the morning at 7, during eight months, aud at half-past 7 from November to February. The Mail cart to Maldon and Burnham, through Great Baddow,
Danbury, &c. departs at 4 morning, and arrives at a quarter before 9 evening.
The Dunmow and Bishop’s Stortford Mail Cart, through Great Waltham, Felsted, Stebbing, &c. departs at 4 morning, and arrives at a quarter to 9 evening. Postmen to Broomfield, Little Waltham, Chignal-Smealy, Writtle, Roxwell, &c. leave every morning about seven, and one to Ongar every Monday morning. Money Orders are granted and paid here.
