Southchurch 1848 Whites directory
SOUTHCHURCH is a pleasant village, about a mile N.E. of Southend, and 4 miles S.S.E. of Rochford, on a declivity overlooking the estuary of the Thames. Its parish contains 432 inhabitants, and 1825 acres of land, extending southward to the flat shore of the estuary between Shoebury and Southend. Before 824, this lordship and the church were given to Christ’s Church, Canterbury. G. Welch, Esq. , is now lord of the manor, but part of the soil belongs to other proprietors. The house at the Wic farm, stands on a bold eminence, commanding a delightful prospect over the Thames, the Nore, and the Medway. The Church is a small ancient building, with a tower and spire, and was repaired, and a gallery erected at the west end, in 1756, at the charge of Thomas Drew, Esq., a former lord of the manor. The rectory, valued in K.B. at £27. Os. 10d., and in 1831 at £762, is in the peculiar jurisdiction and patronage of the Archbishop of Canterbury, and in the incumbency of the Rev. C. Chisholm, M.A.
