Billericay 1937 directory

Billericay is a small town on an eminence at the junction of the road from London to Rochford and Southend, with that from Chelmsford to the ferry over the Thames at Tilbury, 5 miles east from Brentwood, 9 south from Chelmsford and 23 from Whitechapel church, and was formed into a separate ecclesiastical parish 14 Sept 1844, but for civil purposes is within the parish of Great Burstead.
By the Essex Review Order 1934, part of this civil parish was transferred to the urban district of Brentwood.
The London and North Eastern Railway Company has a station at the lower end of the town, on their branch line from Shenfield, opened January 1st 1889, which proceeds via Wickford to Maldon, Burnham and Southminster, and also through Rayleigh and Rochford to Southend. The town is lighted with gas and electricity.
The church of St Mary Magdalene is a plain rectangular edifice of brick, consisting of nave and a western tower, the only part of the old church now remaining, and containg one bell and and an illuminated clock, provided in 1897: the tower was restored in 1880, and in the same year, a stained glass window was erected as a memorial to William Carter esq, and his wife, by their children: the church was further restored in 1930; and now affords 400 sittings. The register dates from the year 1844; all earlier entries referring to this place will be found in the registers of Great Burstead.
The living is a vicarage, in the gift of the Bishop of Chelmsford, and held since 1918 by the Rev Walter Sydney Smith, AKCL, who is a surrogate.
There is a Baptist chapel and a Congregational chapel, founded in 1672, with 625 sittings; attached to the latter is a manse and a burial ground. The vicarage house was erected in 1924, and adjoining the vicarage is the Archer Memorial hall, erected in 1930 in memory of Miss Archer, late of Little Burstead.
The Roman Catholic Church, was begun in 1917 and completed in 1927; there are 200 sittings. There is a Baptist chapel and a Congregational chapel, founded in 1672, with 625 sittings; attached to the latter is a manse and a burial ground; there is also a small church at Sunnymede, to hold 60, built in 1929.
The Mayflower Hall was erected in 1927, as a memorial to the Pilgrim Fathers who sailed in 1620 in the Mayflower for America; four of them who went on from Billericay, are commemmorated by a tablet in the entrance all.
Lord Petre is lord of the manor. The area is 29,367 acres of land and inland water. The population in 1931 was 27,708.
By the Billericay (Union of Parishes) Order 1936, the parishes comprising the Urban District were united to form the new parish of Billericay, co-extensive with the Urban District.
