Pebmarsh 1863 Whites directory
PEBMARSH, a village near the source of a rivulet, 3 miles N.E. of Halstead, and W. of Bures, has a large silk factory, belonging to E. L. and H. Rodick. Its parish contains 653 souls and 1978 acres of land. G. W. Puller, Esq., is lord of the manor, which was anciently held by the Bigod and Fitz-Ralph families, the latter of whom took the name of De Pebmers, and were long seated at the Hall, which stood in Castle Meadow. The Sperling, Start, Collis,
and other families have estates in the parish. The Earl of Verulam is patron of the rectory, valued in K.B. at £10, and now at £450. The Hon. and Rev. Edward H. Grimston, M.A., has held the rectory since 1841. He has 26A. 2R. of glebe and a handsome Rectory House, built in 1842-3.
The Church (St. John the Baptist) is a fine ancient structure, which was re-pewed about 1833. It has a tower and three bells, and its spacious aisles are separated from the nave by light pillars supporting Gothic arches. A new east window was inserted in 1861 by the rector. The tithes were commuted in 1838 for £683 per annum. Afair for toys and pleasure is held here on June 24th. The present Parish School was erected in 1850. The old one was built in 1787, and, as a Sunday school, it is endowed with £7. 14s. 4d. per annum, arising from stock purchased with £200 left by the Hon. and Rev. H. G. Bucknall in 1817. The parish has long held, for the use of the poor, a cottage and garden, occupied by paupers ; and a cottage and three roods of land, let for £5. The poor have also 20s. a-year from
Wincoll’s Charity. (See Almphamstone.)
