STAMBOURNE, a long scattered village, pleasantly situated near the source of a rivulet, six miles S.W. of Clare, three miles
W. of Yeldham Station, and nine miles N.W. of Halstead, has in its parish 537 souls, 1840 acres of strong land, and several neat houses, &c. Fras. Edw. Gibson, Esq. of Saffron Walden, is lord of the manor of Stambourne Hall, which is in the Liberty of the Duchy of Lancaster, and was long held by the Pever, Broughton, Macwilliam, and other families . Church Farm belongs to William Ruffle, Esq. , and has some ancient elm trees. Part of the parish belongs to Queen’s College, Cambridge ; G. Nottidge, J. Taylor, and W. N. Woodham, Esqrs., and several smaller owners.
The Church (St. Thomas) has a nave, chancel, and north aisle ; and a massive tower containing five bells. It is an ancient structure, and had a guild or free chapel, which was granted by Edward VI. to Ralph Agard and Thos. Smith. The rectory, valued in K.B. at £15, and now at £366, is in the patronage of the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, and incumbency of the Rev. John Forster, M.A. , who has about 20A. of glebe and a good residence. The tithes were commuted in 1840, for £505 per annum. The National School is a neat building, erected in 1861, at the cost of about £600. Here is an Independent Chapel, built in 1717, by a Nonconformist congregation, formed by the Rev. Hy. Havers, M.A., in 1662. The minister of this chapel has the free occupation of a farm of about 30 acres, left by Mr. Hallow, more than 110 years ago. He has also a cottage at Steeple Bumpstead, left bya Mr. Sams. The Rev. James Spurgeon has been the highly respected pastor of this chapel since 1810, and is now (1862) in his 86th year. He is the grandfather of that celebrated preacher, Mr. Spurgeon, of London. The parish has £15 a year, for schooling poor children, from Cole’s Charity, as noticed with Finchingfield. A tenement purchased with £30, given by an unknown donor, is let for £5, which is distributed in blankets among poor parishioners. POST via Halstead.
