TWINSTEAD, a small village and parish, five miles N.E. by E. of Halstead, and about 3 miles S. S. W. of Sudbury, has only 193 souls and 977 acres of land, including 104A. of woodland.
King Viall, Esq., is owner of the farm and mansion of Twinstead Hall, which was built in the reign of Elizabeth, by Isaac Wincoll, Esq. , and is now occupied by Capt. B. Sparrow. Pelham Hall, a large ancient house, formerly belonging to the Pelhams, is now the property of the Firmin family. Jph. Thompson and J. M. Cook, Esqrs. , have estates here.
The Church is a small neat structure, built in 1860, after the old one had been many years in a dilapidated condition. The rectory, valued in K.B. at £6, and now at £255, is in the gift of the Lord Chancellor, and incumbency of the Rev. H. V. Shortland, M.A., who has 14A. ofglebe, and a good residence, built about 65 years ago. The tithes were commuted in 1839 for £300 per annum. The poor parishioners have 20s. a year from Wyncoll’s charity. (See Alphamstone.)
