Little Hallingbury 1863 Whites directory

HALLINGBURY ( LITTLE) is a neat and pleasant village, on the east side of the picturesque vale of the river Stort, three miles S.S.E. of Bishop-Stortford. Its parish contains 513 souls and 1610 acres of land, separated from Hertfordshire by the Stort, to which it sends a tributary stream. It is partly in the manor of Monksbury, belonging to J. A. Houblon, Esq.; but mostly in the manor of Little Hallingbury Hall, which was settled by Thos. Sutton, Esq. , in the reign of James I., as part of the endowment of his munificient charity in London, called the Charter House.
The Church (Virgin Mary) is a small neat building, with a square tower and shingled spire. It was restored in 1854. The rectory, valued in K.B. at £15, and now at £470, is in the patronage of the Governors of the Charter House, and incumbency of the Rev. S. Pemberton, B.A., who has a good residence and 27A. of glebe.
