Theydon Bois 1863 Whites directory
THOYDON-BOIS, or THEYDON-BOIS, a scattered village on the north side of the vale of the river Roding, and on the east side of Epping Forest, has in its parish 610 inhabitants and 1718 acres of land, partly in the forest. It is 3 miles S. of Epping, and was held by Peter de Valoines, at the Norman Survey, and afterwards by the Tany, Wroth, and Elrington families. Mrs. Hall-Dare is lady of the manor; but a great part of the soil belongs to various free and copyholders.
The Church (St. Mary) was rebuilt in 1843 at the cost of £2200, and is a neat edifice in the Norman style. It was appropriated to St. Bartolomew’s Priory, in Smithfield, by William de Bosco, and at the dissolution the tithes were granted to Edward Elrington, Esq. Mrs. Hall-Dare is now impropriator of the rectory, and patroness of the perpetual curacy, valued at only £166, though it has been augmented by Queen Anne’s Bounty, &c. The Rev. G. Hambleton is the incumbent, and has a good residence, built in 1840, at the cost of nearly £2000, by the Ecclesiastical Commissioners, who have also augmented the living. The glebe is 7A. , and the tithes were commuted in 1848. A National School was built here in 1840, at the cost of £300. The Poor’s Land, 14A. , now let for £1 10s., was given by an unknown donor, who also gave to the poor a yearly rent-charge of £2 out of Thoydon Hall.
