North Fambridge Whites Directory in 1848
FAMBRIDGE (NORTH) is a small parish of scattered houses, on the north side of the river Crouch, opposite South Fambridge, to which it has a ferry. It is nearly 7 miles S. of Maldon, and 5 miles N. by W. of Rochford, and contains 142 souls, and 1260A. of land, of which 300 acres are marsh, penetrated by two short creeks of the Crouch.
William Gale, Esq., who resides at the Hall, is lord of the manor, but part of the parish belongs to W. P. Johnson, Esq., Mrs. Heale, W. Parker, and a few smaller owners. The account of the owners of the manor is very imperfect till 1328, and since then it has been held by the Burgh, Mortimer, Langley, Bourchier, and many other families.
The Church (Holy Trinity,) is a small ancient fabric, with a bell hung on the roof. In the chancel is a brass, dated 1590, in memory of William Osborne and his wife and children. The rectory, valued in K.B. at £4. 13s. 4d. , and in 1831 at £333, is in the patronage of the Lord Chancellor, and incumbency of the Rev. Thomas Benson, B.A., who has 25A. 3R. 27P. of glebe, and a neat residence, built in 1831 , of white brick.
