Dengie Hundred 1848 Whites Directory

DENGIE HUNDRED.
DENGIE, or DENGEY HUNDRED, is of an oblong figure, averaging about 14 miles in length , from east to west, and about eight in breadth,
from north to south. It is bounded, on the east, by the ocean; on the north, by the broad estuary of the Blackwater and the river Chelmer; on the south, by the navigable river Crouch; and on the west, by Chelmsford Hundred. It is thus nearly encompassed on three sides by tidal waters, and is penetrated by several short salt-creeks, to which several small rivulets of fresh water run from the interior and western
parts of the Hundred. Near the sea-coast, and the Blackwater and Crouch, are extensive tracts of rich marshes, from which the rest of the district rises gently, and in some places in bold and picturesque undulations. The whole Hundred is fertile, and well-cultivated, and was anciently called Danes-ig. , i.e. , Danes’ Island, from its being over-run by them for a long period, nearly to the exclusion of the Saxons.
It has several large and well built villages, and some valuable oyster layings and fisheries . The Borough of Maldon forms part of its north- western boundary. It is all in the Southern Parliamentary Division of Essex ; in Maldon Polling District and Union ; and in the Diocese of Rochester, Archdeaconry of Essex, and Deanery of Dengey; of which latter the Rev. W. Holland, of Cold Norton, and the Rev. T. Schreiber, of Bradwell, are the rural deans. The following enumeration of the 21 parishes of Dengie Hundred, and of three parishes of Maldon Borough, shews their territorial extent, their population in 1841 , and the annual value of their lands and buildings, as assessed to the property tax in 1843.
