BIRCHANGER, a small village and parish, 2 miles E.N.E. of Bishop Stortford, contains 386 souls, and 1051 acres of land, mostly belonging, with the manor and the patronage of the rectory, to the Warden and Fellows of New College, Oxford, to which it was granted by Edward III. N. Micklethwaite, Esq., and a few smaller owners, have estates here.
The Church ( Virgin Mary,) is an ancient structure, on a commanding eminence, and has a nave and chancel of one pace, and a round tower crowned by a low shingled spire. The rectory, valued in K.B. at £9 . 13s. 4d., and in 1831 at £230, is enjoyed by the Rev. J. C. H. Stokes , of Manewden. The parsonage is a neat mansion, and the tithes have been commuted for £236. 5s. 8d. per annum. Princes Wood, in this parish, was formerly a manor, in which a lawless court used to be held at midnight.
