Little Hallingbury 1848 Whites Directory

HALLINGBURY ( LITTLE) is a neat and pleasant village, on the east side of the picturesque vale of the river Stort, 3 miles S.S.E. of Bishop-Stortford. Its parish contains 497 souls, and 1,610 acres of land, separated from Hertfordshire by the Stort, to which it sends a tributary stream. It is partly in the manor of Monksbury, belonging to J. A. Houblon, Esq.; but mostly in the manor of Little Halling- bury Hall, which was settled by Thos. Sutton, Esq. , in the reign of James I., as part of the endowment of his munificent charity in London, called the Charter House. The founder’s first intention was to build this hospital here, in a field south of the manor house.
The Church, (Virgin Mary,) a small neat building, with a square tower and shingled spire. The rectory, valued in K.B. at £15, and in 1831 at £430, is in the patronage of the Governors of the Charter House, and incumbency of the Rev. C. R. Pritchett, M.A., who has a good residence, and 27A. of glebe. The tithes were commuted in 1840, for £351 17s. per annum.
