Ongar Hundred 1848 Whites Directory – parishes in this Hundred
ONGAR HUNDRED
Is of an irregular oval figure, about 16 miles in length, from north to south, and varying from 8 to 5 miles in breadth. It is bounded by the Hundreds of Waltham and Harlow, on the west ; Dunmow on the north ; Dunmow, Chelmsford, and Barstable, on the east ; and by Chafford, Havering-atte-Bower, and Becontree, on the south. It is traversed throughout its whole length by the river Roding, which winds in a circuitous route through a fertile and picturesque valley, and receives here many tributary streams. Epping and Hainault Forests are on opposite sides of the south-western part of the Hundred, and are partly within its limits. There are many handsome seats in various parts of the Hundred, and a railway is projected to traverse it from Epping, to join the North Eastern line, at Lea Bridge. The heavier lands are intermixed with others having a fertile loamy soil, on gravel ; and near the river and its tributaries is an abundance of rich grass land. Among the principal landowners are, Capel Cure, Esq. , of Blake Hall ; the Rev. J. B. Stane, of Forest Hall ; Sir E. B. Smijth , Bart. , of Hill Hall ; Sir C. C. Smith, of Suttons ; the Countess of Waldegrave, and W. C. Marsh, Esq. , of Park Hall. This Hundred is in the western part of the Southern Parliamentary Divi- sion of Essex, and forms part of Epping Polling District. It is all in the Diocese of Rochester, and Archdeaconry of Essex. Chigwell and Loughton parishes are in Barking Deanery, and all its other parishes are in Ongar Deanery, of which latter the Rev. H. Soames, of Stapleford Tawney, and the Rev. T. Hubbard, of Stondon Massey, are the Rural Deans.
