Uttlesford Hundred 1848 Whites Directory
UTTLESFORD HUNDRED Is in the north-western angle of Essex, and extends northward from Bishop- Stortford and Dunmow turnpike, to the extremity of Great Chesterford parish, a distance of 16 miles, but it varies from ten to less than five miles in breadth. It is traversed from south to north by the London and Newmarket turnpike, and the North Eastern Railway, on which it has STATIONS at Stansted, Elsenham, Newport, Wenden, Littlebury, and Chesterford. The River Cam rises within its limits, and receives here many tributary streams, in its northern course towards Cambridge. The general appearance of the whole Hundred is distinguished by a pleasing diversity of hill and dale, everywhere well wooded, and presenting a pleasing mixture of meadow and arable lands, and in many places neat mansions, with tasteful pleasure grounds. Its north-western portion, about Littlebury, Strethall, and Chrishall, forms a range of high land, in which are several lofty summits, commanding extensive views over this and the two adjoining counties. It is bounded, on the north, by Cambridgeshire ; on the west, by Hertfordshire and Clavering Hundred; on the south, by Harlow Hundred ; and on the east, by Dunmow and Freshwell Hundreds. It is in the Northern Parliamentary Division of Essex, and is all in Saffron Walden Polling District, except Takeley parish, which is in Dunmow Polling District. Ecclesiastically, it is in the Diocese of Rochester, and Archdeaconry of Colchester, and all in the Rural Deaneries of Newport, Saffron Walden, and Stansted, except Takeley, which is in the Rural Deanery of Sampford. The Rural Deans residing within its limits are the Rev. J. Collin, of Newport ; the Rev. R. Clutton, of Saffron Walden, and the Rev. J. Torriano, of Stansted Mountfichet.
The Borough and Town of Saffron- Walden is in the heart of this Hundred, but has a separate municipal and magisterial jurisdiction.
